ATTFE College Principal: Liz Barrett OBE DL

Liz has worked in Lifelong Learning for over 20 years and is passionate about the opportunities and life chances it enables. She actively strives to embed inclusivity in to all that she does, is focused upon challenging social mobility, raising aspirations within the communities that she serves and is very much an innovator and change maker.

Liz became Principal of ATTFE College in 2016. ATTFE College is an anchor organisation which achieved Ofsted Good under her leadership in 2017, followed by Ofsted Good with Outstanding features (in personal development and most significantly in adult learning) in 2023. Liz is committed to locality and ensures that ATTFE College supports social regeneration within its local communities wherever possible. This is done through renting vacant shops and using as learning stations to support high street regeneration, through to sourcing local supplies. Almost 50% of current staff at ATTFE College were previous learners at the college. This approach demonstrates the powerful impact of individually investing in lifelong learning and the transformational impact it can have personally and professionally.

Through Liz and her leadership, ATTFE College is at the heart of the communities that they serve and actively engage in many different social projects. ATTFE College leads on the café facility at the newly opened Sherwood Observatory Planetarium where ATTFE College learners, volunteers and work experience placements learn new skills whilst gifting time to ensure this facility is viable. ATTFE College also leads on intergenerational Remembrance silhouette work for Nottinghamshire. #InThisTogether is the core strategy within ATTFE College which encourages genuine, holistic collaboration which enables funding to stretch further whilst tackling regeneration and current life challenges.

Liz’s OBE Journey

In 2022 Liz received an OBE for Services to Education in the Queen’s New Year Honours.

Liz’s Deputy Lieutenant Journey

In September 2024, Liz became a Deputy Lieutenant (DL) for Nottinghamshire. DLs directly represent the King and the Crown in their local community, and this is a very high honour indeed. In her personal life, Liz holds numerous voluntary roles including Lead Governor for Sherwood Forest Hospital Trust.

Through learning and continuously developing and deepening new skills, expanding your mind, and adapting to an ever-changing world, Liz firmly believes that lifelong learning presents an opportunity for each and every one of us to be the best version of ourselves.
